When groundnut pods are dried directly on the ground, they have more risk of fungal infection and aflatoxin accumulation.

In the second drying step, pods often are removed from the field and dried further. In this step, Aspergillus infection is more likely when pods are:

  • dried directly on the ground, rather than on a tarp
  • re-wet by rain
  • damaged by animals, insects, etc.
